Containers

One of the most common laboratory problems is cleaning plastic containers. Plastic containers are used often because they're cheap, durable and easy to use yet cleaning them can present some problems. The oily-based material tends to attract oils and residue, particles and even odors can linger in the plastic long after you've turned off the faucet and put away the soap. Yet cleaning plastic containers doesn't have to be difficult if you follow some simple guidelines. Most plastics such as LDPE and HDPE and other polyolefins do not attract contaminants so warm water and mild detergent is enough. Harsh cleaners and scratchy scouring pads are usually unnecessary. If stains still persist, try using an organic solvent like alcohol but do so sparingly. If you need to remove sensitive organic matter try dissolving 120 g of sodium dichromate in 1000 ml tap water mix with 1600 ml concentrated sulfuric acid to create an oxidizing agent that will take away the organic material. But don't use for longer than four hours or it'll destroy your container! Find out more about cleaning here. Remember, don't get frustrated!
