In the laboratory or in the field, the bottle dispenser serves to distribute smaller volumes of reagents and other solutions from large storage bottles and jugs. Essentially, the bottle dispenser consists of a seal, a pump (whether motorized or manual), a volume controller, and a spout. To select the appropriate bottle dispenser, first consider wetted materials; the pump components must be chemically compatible with the bottle’s contents. Many dispensers are mechanized, and all moving parts of the pump and its seals must be taken into account. Volume range, accuracy, and reproducibility all play important roles, too. Commonly, volumes available range from 0.1 to 100 mL. Most offer accuracy of at least +/-1.0% and reproducibility of +/-0.1%. Some bottle dispensers include other features, such as programmable distribution to speed up repeated volume dispensing, or low-profile designs to conserve valuable lab space. For interchangeable use, select a bottle dispenser that is autoclavable.
