The Kjeldahl determination of nitrogen came as a result of beer. Danish chemist Johan Kjeldhal was hired by Copenhagen’s Carlsberg Laboratory in the 1870s. The lab was operated by Carlsberg Brewery which today is the fourth largest brewery in the world. The Danish beer company wanted to find a way to determine how much protein was in the grain used to make its malt. You got more beer if there was less protein. This is how Johan began researching his Kjeldahl determination. He focused on measuring the nitrogen in the protein. Now the multi-step Kjeldahl determination is used for protein analysis in the almost all foods and beverages. Cole-Parmer has an array of extraction and analytical glassware apparatuses for various applications, including: arsine, distillation, cyanide, Kjeldahl determination, Kuderna-Danish concentration, and solvent recovery. Outside of glassware, choose from various extraction heaters to address Kjeldahl determination on a macro or micro scale. Use soxhlet extraction glassware systems for continuous extraction of solids with a suitable solvent.
