About Gloveboxes
Gloveboxes are used to prevent contact between potentially hazardous materials with the outside environment or operating personnel. Some of these materials or processes may be sensitive to ambient environment and hence need to be worked with under isolated conditions. This is achieved by containing such a substance within the glovebox equipment. Examples of such materials include toxic chemicals, radioactive isotopes, biological materials like cell cultures, viruses or DNA, among others. Some small-scale processes that may need containment include purification of chemicals, tissue culture manipulation, coating of materials under sterile or controlled conditions.
Besides containment, gloveboxes are also available to control other environmental parameters like temperature, moisture, oxygen, etc. These features are useful to work with materials sensitive to these parameters. The isolator portion of the glovebox has slots for gloves through which objects inside can be manipulated. These slots or ports have airtight sealing. The gloves are available in varied materials like rubber, neoprene, nitrile, or may be specially treated depending on the hazardous substance being manipulated.
Gloveboxes and isolators also come with optional features depending on the materials being handled, such as remote access circuits, input-output channels with attached pumps, purifiers and filters for controlling chamber gases among others.
