Is a metal or plastic electrical junction box better? Let’s start with steel. The 304 stainless steel electrical junction box and the 316L stainless steel electrical junction box are rated NEMA 4X. All units include a foam-in-place gasket to ensure a perfect seal and minimize (or eliminate) egress from water or dust. Different options are available including wall mount brackets and thumb-turn handles. For extremely hostile environments – dirty, wet, gritty, you might want to go with a plastic electrical junction box. These include plastic electronic enclosures NEMA approved 4x with nonmetallic hinges and snap-closing latches. A sealed polycarbonate and ABS enclosure arrives with wall mounting holes and features a flat, smooth cover. (Must order cable glands to achieve NEMA 4X rating) The debate over the constructive material of an electrical junction box probably won’t be solved this century but either way Cole-Parmer has you covered.
