Petri Dishes and Contact Plates

A lab dish is only as good as it is clean. For glass lab dishes, it is optimal that they are not only physically clean but also free from chemicals and have no lingering bacteria or other residue. Though penicillin was discovered because an absent-minded biologist left a Petri dish out in the open, the more likely result of an exposed lab dish is contamination. And if you have an aggressive cell culture, such as the HeLa cells, well you can contaminate cell lines across the globe. Good laboratory practice is to remove all grease and oil, soak glass labware thoroughly and clean after each use. But human beings are the biggest impurity problem. The common cold, sneezing, the rubbing of the hand against the cheek, it's all fodder for spoiling sterile work. Autoclaving is a powerful weapon against impurity but use of chromic acid cleaning solution may work as well. When cleaning your lab dish, don't forget to rinse otherwise all cleaning might be in vain.
