PVC pipe is a favorite of many industries. Made from the third most commonly used plastic, polyvinyl chloride, PVC pipe is prized because of its resistance to chemicals, low weight and more importantly low cost. In the 1980s, chlorinated polyvinyl chloride (CPVC) which closely resembles the ubiquitous plastic became en vogue. For permanent routine fluid lines that demand rigid walls and good chemical resistance, PVC pipe is often an excellent alternative. Pipes made from CPVC are generally more expensive than PVC pipe, but they also handle a higher temperature range. Most residential plumbing lines use both CPVC and PVC piping, with CPVC lines used to handle hot water and PVC lines used to handle cold water. Another consideration is the thickness, or schedule, of the pipe. The wall thickness of the PVC tube will determine how well it contains pressure. For most uses, Schedule 40 pipe, rated for a maximum pressure of 140 psi, will suffice. Schedule 80 pipe is another common size of PVC pipe, but it has a thicker wall and is rated for pressures up to 200 psi.
