Radiation Detectors

A personal radiation detector is one of the many devices lab workers use to keep them safe. Exposure to radiation through contamination or irradiation can be a significant hazard. Even small amounts over a long time can increase the risk of cancer. In emergency situations, radiation can cause illness, burns, or even death. In nuclear disasters, both the radiation itself and the radioactive ash can be lethal. If a radiation dose is high and penetrates the body, Acute Radiation Syndrome (ARS) may occur. That’s why a personal radiation detector is used to prevent harm. A personal radiation detector monitors the environment to alert users to the presence of radioactive material. Depending on the type (gamma radiation detector, alpha radiation detector, radiation dosimeters), they can detect and measure types of radiation, levels of radiation, counts, accumulated dose, and dose rates. Cole-Parmer offers several low-level sensitive handheld and table-top units with varying features, including documentation capabilities, timers, and ergonomic design. General-purpose detectors are available with uncompensated halogen-quenched sensors for measuring alpha, beta, gamma, and X-ray radiation; select meters have energy-compensated sensors for increased sensitivity to gamma and X-ray radiation.
