Stem cells are unspecialized cells that, through cell division, can renew themselves and generate new cells. In addition, these cells can become a specific tissue or organ cell through experimental manipulations. Stem cells are typically classified into one of two categories, embryonic stem cells and adult (or non-embryonic) stem cells. The main difference between the two types of stem cells is that embryonic stem cells are capable of becoming any cell type within the human body, while adult stem cells are typically limited to the cell of origin, even though some evidence suggests that they may be able to differentiate into other cell types.
