Rubber stoppers are a miracle for lab workers. But there are some factors you should consider when using rubber stoppers in lab applications. When using these items in combination with glass tubing or thermometers you have to be mindful that cuts from the glass can occur. More often than not, these cuts happen when people try to shove a rubber stopper into narrow openings on glass containers. They can also occur when workers have to push glass tubing into the hole of a stopper. Avoid common mistakes that occur doing this process—including cuts, breakage and contamination. Make sure there is a protective layer between your hands and the glass tubing or thermometer. This prevents any slipping mishaps as glass is notoriously tough to grip. A cloth towel is great because it can protect you from injury. If you’re inserting the tube into the stopper be sure to lubricate the glass tube. Also remember that glass tubing is less flexible than rubber stoppers. Glass breaks, rubber bends so forcing the glass tubing will only result in shattered glass. In the end patience may be the best virtue for paring rubber stoppers with glass tubing.
