  • Q:

How should the pH tester be stored between uses? Should the electrode be placed in a solution to avoid drying? If so, what solution should be used?
    Asked on 10/29/2012 by BM

    1 answer

    • STAFF EXPERT

      A:

The pH Testr 30 is often stored dry as it may be used sporadically or taken from place to place so storing in a solution is not always feasible.
If the probe can be stored wet and upright, we suggest either the pH 4 calibration buffer (like part number 00654-00) or pH electrode storage solution (00653-04) when not in use.

  • Q:

Would this be suitable to assess the pH of bread at site level without preparation, i.e., use it as a spear?
Asked on 2/15/2012 by Anonymous from Maidenhead

    1 answer

    • STAFF EXPERT

      A:

You could, but I would recommend the 35634-40, the Spear-type pH meter that is designed for this application.

  • Q:

i pour about one inch of each buffer solution in small glass baby food jars, with lids. can i use this solution more than once? if so for how long or how many times.
    thank you.
Asked on 7/30/2011 by Bert from Sault Ste Marie, ON

    1 answer

    • STAFF EXPERT

      A:

It is not recommended to re-use the buffer solutions. Residues in the containers and ions in the air can change the pH levels in the buffer.

  • Q:

Can I use the PH30 for a soil ph test?
Asked on 3/24/2011 by TMD from Suffolk, VA

    1 answer

    • STAFF EXPERT

      A:

To take a soil reading with this meter you would need to do the following: Prepare the sample by combining a 10 g soil sample with 10 g of distilled water, mixing thoroughly, and allowing the mixture to settle for 10 minutes. Carefully insert probe so bulb is in the soil part and the junction is in the supernatant. Allow reading to stabilize.

  • Q:

pHTestr30 continues to scroll through the buffer selection during calibration and therefore can not be calibrated. Is there a way to manually input buffer value?
    Asked on 2/23/2011 by Anonymous

    1 answer

    • Staff Reviewer

      A:

There is no way to enter the value manually, but if the sensor is not recognizing the buffers the probe may need to be cleaned or replaced. Please contact our technical application specialists for additional assistance (contact information can be found in the "contact us" section on the web page).

  • Q:

what is the function of phtestr 30
Asked on 1/21/2011 by me from malaysia

    1 answer

    • STAFF EXPERT

      A:

The pH testr 30 will read pH and temperature of a liquid.

  • Q:

What are the differences between the 10,20 and 30 (other than the pH resolution)? I'm interested in obtaining a meter for measuring the pH of solutions buffered with sodium phosphate, potassium phosphate or TRIS. The meter would also be used to measure pH of buffered paraformaldehyde solutions. Are there any chemical incompatibilities with these products?
    Asked on 5/14/2010 by Anonymous

    1 answer

    • Staff Reviewer

      A:

The pH 30 will display the temperature where the 10 and 20 will not. The 10 has lower resolution than the 20 and 30. All of the meters use the same probe. The probe they use has a double junction.
Measurement problems of TRIS can be avoided by using an electrode with a calomel reference internal element, or a "double-junction" design.
Since this series utilizes a double junction probe, and of them would work for your needs.

  • Q:

Never heard pH scale of 0-15, as stated on specification, please explain.
Asked on 3/17/2010 by Bob from Indiana

    1 answer

    • STAFF EXPERT

      A:

pH when measured via electrode, is not only potential hydrogen; the probe will also get an activity factor. This represents the tendency of hydrogen ions to interact with other components of the solution which affects, among other things, the electrical potential of a pH meter.
As a result, pH can be affected by the ionic strength of a solution and the reasoning the scale extends beyond the theoretical 0-14.

The unit comes with a probe (already attached) and betteries. However, calibration solutions are sold separately. This unit doesn not have a stand as it is intended to be a "pocket" type handheld unit.

Comments about Oakton Waterproof pHTestr 30 Pocket pH Tester:

We use 15 of these for 3 weeks in the field each summer. Completely untrained students use them on streams, and we intercompare results. The mean difference is 0.10 pH units and the median 0.065. I consider that to be excellent. After 4 years we had to replace all of the electrodes, perhaps because they sat dry most of the time, though this is recommended storage by the manufacturer.
