  • Q:

We process our own salsa to sell and must maintain a ph below 4.0. Can this ph meter be used for canning food products like salsa.
Asked on 11/4/2013 by CajunMan Chris from Altanta, GA

    1 answer

    • STAFF EXPERT

      A:

This pHTestr will incorporate a double-junction electrode design, which would protect the porous plug from direct contact with the particulate/solids in solution. This pen meter would also be able to appropriately read solutions with a pH of 4 if appropriately calibrated so as to bracket the expected reading i.e. calibrating to minimum of 2-points at 4 and 7. The probe will also have an ATC (automatic-temperature compensation) function which will allow standardization of the pH reading regardless of fluid temperature. We do suggest that the salsa be sampled from the container and tested, rather than directly testing within the batch, as the electrode will include a fragile glass bulb. With this being said, the pHTestr 30 should be appropriate for the application if properly calibrated, cleaned, and maintained. Please contact our technical support department for further information on this pen meter.

  • Q:

Which handheld PH meters are dual soil and water testers?
Asked on 8/4/2013 by ken from United States

    1 answer

    • STAFF EXPERT

      A:

Testing the pH of your soil sample

      Equipment Needed

Method A. LAB: To get started you will need a standard pH meter, a pH electrode, an ATC probe, a stirrer with stir bar, beaker, deionized water, and buffers. We recommend a Sure-Flow™ electrode because the free-flowing, easy-to-clean junction never clogs.

Method B. If the testing is being performed for recreational gardening, you can use a pH tester with ATC (35634-10, -20, -30) and buffers for calibration (35653-04).

      Soil Sampling

Scoop up soil into a clean, dry plastic jar or plastic bag. Remove stones and crush any clumps of soil for better results. Gather two to three representative samples of each soil sample to confirm results. No sample preparation or preservative required.

      Laboratory Testing—Method A

      1. Weigh 20 g of soil sample into a 100 mL beaker.
      2. Add 20 mL of deionized (DI) water and place on a stirrer to mix for 30 minutes.
      3. Cover and let stand for an hour.
      4. For the most accurate measurements, allow the buffers and the soil sample both to come to room temperature. (A difference in temperature will add error to your measurement.)
      5. We recommend a 2-point calibration with a pH 7 and a pH 10 buffer solution. The electrode slope should be between 92 and 102%.
      6. Rinse electrode and ATC with DI water and blot dry. Place probes in soil sample and measure pH and record measurement.
      Alternative Testing—Method B

      1. Place soil sample about ¾ full in sample jar and add distilled water to cover soil.
      2. Cap jar and shake the soil vigorously a few times.
      3. Let mixture stand 10 minutes to dissolve the salts in the soil.
      4. Calibrate the pH tester with a pH 7 and a pH 10 buffer solution.
      5. Remove the cap and place the pH tester into the wet soil slurry.
      6. Measure pH and record measurement.
      Results

A minor (<±0.5 pH) difference between results of the same soil sample indicates good technique and high confidence in results.

One of the easiest ways to correct the pH of your soil (both acidic and alkaline) is by adding compost. The alternative is to add an alkaline source (such as ground limestone) to acidic soil or an acidic source (such as pine needles or peat moss) to alkaline soil. Consult with authorities from a local agricultural extension office, local growers associations, or university before you apply chemicals to correct soil pH.

  • Q:

how can i sure that our pH meter working properly
Asked on 5/18/2013 by satendra from Himachal Pradesh India

    1 answer

    • STAFF EXPERT

      A:

The best way to check with the pHTestr is working properly will to measure the pH of a known buffer after a calibration has been performed. A reading at or very close to the value of this buffer will indicate that this instrument has been properly calibrated and is working properly.

  • Q:

How should the pH tester be stored between uses? Should the electrode be placed in a solution to avoid drying? If so, what solution should be used?
    Asked on 10/29/2012 by BM

    1 answer

    • STAFF EXPERT

      A:

The pH Testr 30 is often stored dry as it may be used sporadically or taken from place to place so storing in a solution is not always feasible.
If the probe can be stored wet and upright, we suggest either the pH 4 calibration buffer (like part number 00654-00) or pH electrode storage solution (00653-04) when not in use.

Would this be suitable to assess the pH of bread at site level without preparation, i.e., use it as a spear?
Asked on 2/15/2012 by Anonymous from Maidenhead

    1 answer

    • STAFF EXPERT

      A:

You could, but I would recommend the 35634-40, the Spear-type pH meter that is designed for this application.

    • STAFF EXPERT

      A:

It is not recommended to re-use the buffer solutions. Residues in the containers and ions in the air can change the pH levels in the buffer.

  • Q:

Can I use the PH30 for a soil ph test?
Asked on 3/24/2011 by TMD from Suffolk, VA

    1 answer

    • STAFF EXPERT

      A:

To take a soil reading with this meter you would need to do the following: Prepare the sample by combining a 10 g soil sample with 10 g of distilled water, mixing thoroughly, and allowing the mixture to settle for 10 minutes. Carefully insert probe so bulb is in the soil part and the junction is in the supernatant. Allow reading to stabilize.

  • Q:

pHTestr30 continues to scroll through the buffer selection during calibration and therefore can not be calibrated. Is there a way to manually input buffer value?
    Asked on 2/23/2011 by Anonymous

    1 answer

    • Staff Reviewer

      A:

There is no way to enter the value manually, but if the sensor is not recognizing the buffers the probe may need to be cleaned or replaced. Please contact our technical application specialists for additional assistance (contact information can be found in the "contact us" section on the web page).

Great pH Meter. Con pH element has to be replaced from time to time, but that is true with all pH meters reguardless of maker. pH 30 gave great reading, but user must read instructions and learn to use the meter. I have owned the pH 30 for Six years and have replaced the pH element twice. I would purchase this pH 30 Meter again.

Read, read, read directions. When one does, it's accurate and easy to use. I have used it in different situations. I have found that the more it is used, the accuracy lasts much longer, i.e., two dozen uses. Inactivity requires, less than three uses per week, calibration each time. and, to use the old addage, that's the best money I have ever spent...

Comments about Oakton Waterproof pHTestr 30 Pocket pH Tester:

As a Water Lab Technician in Baghdad. It fell to my department to test potable water systems daily for the US Military. Our crew was primarily low skilled workers from various countries with little to no English skills. These meters were perfect for that environment. The only problem we ever encountered was in changing the electrode. It is critical that it be done in a dry environment and that the seal be set just snug. Over tightening would cause the seal to leak thus ruining the electrode and the meter. Once the seal is snug a perminant marker line across the joint will give you a visual reference that the seal is still in proper position.

We use 15 of these for 3 weeks in the field each summer. Completely untrained students use them on streams, and we intercompare results. The mean difference is 0.10 pH units and the median 0.065. I consider that to be excellent. After 4 years we had to replace all of the electrodes, perhaps because they sat dry most of the time, though this is recommended storage by the manufacturer.

Comments about Oakton Waterproof pHTestr 30 Pocket pH Tester:

I use this product to check the Ph of Laboratory animal drinking water(Rodents). The Ph of the animal drinking water needs to be in the 2.0 to 3.0 range . The PHTESTR 30, WATERPROOF, DJ, WITH TEMPERATURE READOUT pHTestr works very well in this range.
