  • Determine water flow in closed circuits or open channels
  • Biodegradable and nontoxic
Dyes diffuse rapidly in water, producing a vivid, easy-to-see color. Excellent for identifying diffusion and dispersion patterns, rates of flow, discharge locations, seepage areas, sea marking, and more.
Fluorescent yellow/green dye (fluorescein) works best in silt-filled waters. Use an ultraviolet lamp (order separately below) to trace fluorescent red or yellow/green dyes where normal visual detection is difficult. Minimum detectable concentration of all dyes in clear water is 1 ppm.
Product Type Dye Tracers
Gallons of water for 1 ppm 100,000
Applications Metered systems
Manufacturer number 106501G

  • Q:

What concentration is this solution (weight per volume g/ml)?
    Asked on 1/29/2014 by nsmith

    1 answer

    • STAFF EXPERT

      A:

The concentration of the active ingredient is 7%.

  • Q:

What wavelength should be used for detection of the fluorescent red dye?
    Asked on 8/12/2013 by Lara

    1 answer

    • STAFF EXPERT

      A:

This part number is for the yellow/green color, but any of these fluorescent dyes should be detectable using 365 nm UV light.

  • Q:

Which dye would you recommend for SOIL water tracing of acid yellow (lissamine FF) rhodamine WT and fluorescein. I am concerned about adsorption on the particles.
Asked on 6/3/2013 by none from UK

    1 answer

    • STAFF EXPERT

      A:

The dyes will pass through soil, so it is recommended.

  • Q:

can we use flouroscein with any biodiesel.i am really interested in testing the dye on waste vegetable oil biodiesel and a crude biodiesel.
Asked on 11/18/2011 by sid from birmingham, united kingdom

    2 answers

    • A:

Laser-induced fluorescence screening tools "see" the natural innate fluorescence of the biodiesel materials you are hoping to "label" with dye... so make sure you even need to label them first before you worry about dyes.

Answered on 12/8/2011 by Randy from Fargo, ND USA
    • STAFF EXPERT

      A:

No adverse reaction will occur using water based Item 00298-07, with any biodiesel, but it may not mix well with biodiesel products, therefore test results are not 100% accurate.

  • Q:

I have my yellow/green dye. Now I need the right equipment to see it. The question of wavelength was already answered but what about intensity of the light source? Is the dye going to be perceptible by naked eye or is there eye wear needed?
Asked on 10/25/2011 by neil from pennsylvania

    • Staff Reviewer

      A:

The limit of quantification for this dye is 1 pint in 98 gallons of water (~0.1276%). The optimal wavelength is between 490 - 520 nm. 490-520 nm is not in the UV light range, it is in the white or visual light range and would be blue or green in color. So, a normal light bulb used in the home or office (or just outside) would cause this to fluoresce. That is why limit of detections are listed in ppm (parts per million and percentages).

  • Q:

I am trying to measure the depth of steam penetration in polystyrene molded forms and need a compound that can be carried by or vaporized with the steam. Will this dye work?
Asked on 10/19/2011 by Neil from Pennsylvania

    1 answer

    • Staff Reviewer

      A:

This dye will not stand up to that kind of heat, however the red dye will. Please see part number 00298-06 for the red dye concentrate and NOTE: the red dye is not NSF approved so it cannot come into contact with potable water (water intended to be used for human consumption). So, as long as you are using it in a closed loop system and then disposing of it like waste, this is fine.

  • Q:

How many ppm would be necessary for a mid-strong visual detection in silty river water?
Asked on 7/26/2011 by Zack from Kansas City, MO

    1 answer

    • STAFF EXPERT

      A:

The cutoff for strong visual detection in relatively clear water is 10 ppm, so the mid-strong detection you desire will be somewhere near 10ppm in river water.

  • Q:

Is the dye neutrally buoyant? What is the refractive index? Thank you.
Asked on 7/5/2011 by TN from Seattle, wa

    1 answer

    • STAFF EXPERT

      A:

Yes, the dye has a neutral bouyancy. The refractive index has not been tested as it will be different in every application based on the volume of your sample and the amount of dye used.

  • Q:

If we immerse a porous rock into water containing tracer for few hours, pull it out and cut it in half, can we use a UV light to figure if the dye would have enter the pore structure and reach the center of the rock
Asked on 6/30/2011 by Pete from UK

    1 answer

    • Staff Reviewer

      A:

I see no reason why this would not work.
