Definitions  [Back to search]
Accuracy: The degree of precision. Usually expressed, in terms of error, as a percentage of the specified value.
Distance to size ratio: Optical resolution is defined by the ratio of the distance from the instrument to the object compared to the size of the object being measured (D:S ratio). The larger the ration number the better the instrument's resolution, and the smaller the spot size that can be measured.
Emissivity: Emissivity is the measure of an object's ability to emit infrared energy. Emitted energy indicates the temperature of an object.Emissivity can have a value from 0 to 1.0(blackbody). Most organic, painted, or oxidized surfaces have emissivity values close to 0.95.
Contact probe: Allows temperature contact measurement.
Volt input: Most meters, especially those sold by Cole-Parmer, have a BNC connector. However, some meters do take a US Standard connection. Check your meter’s specifications to find out which connection you need.
Built-in Temperature Compensation: Allows measurement of non-temperature processes.
RS232: Recommended Standard (RS) 232 is a standard developed by the Electronic Industries Association (EIA) that governs the serial communications interface between data processing and data communications equipment. and is widely used to connect computers to peripheral devices. Data from infrared thermometers can be downloaded to PC's so that it can be analyzed.
