Ultrasonics is among the most popular level control technologies. One of the biggest advantages to ultrasonic level controllers is that they do not actually make physical contact with the liquid being monitored. This means that changing liquid conductivity, viscosity, density, corrosiveness, and degree of liquid coating will have no effect on sensor performance. In recent years, this technology has dropped in price while increasing in user features, making it an attractive and viable solution to tank level monitoring.
Cole-Parmer offers a full family of ultrasonic level monitoring sensors and controllers with applications ranging from small process vessels (under 6 feet) to medium sized day storage tanks (6 to 12 feet) to large bulk and waste storage tanks (over 12 feet). For flexibility, you can choose an ultrasonic level device with a 4-20mA output for sending to remote display monitors or, if you prefer, choose a sensor with a built-in display of the level. For control applications, we offer built-in 10A relays that will allow for direct external pump control.
Ultrasonic technology differs from traditional point level sensing in that it provides continuous feedback of the liquid level inside the tank. Not only is it possible to monitor the extremes of the tank, but every point in-betweenan important consideration for critical applications where the volume of liquid inside the tank must be monitored at all times. Moreover, the readout display can be calibrated to liquid height or to the number of total gallons or liters left in the tank.
In addition to all the benefits listed above, recent advances in software have allowed very advanced filter functions to be made available to the user at the touch of a button. These features allow the user to easily calibrate the sensor to work in difficult tank environments, where the sensor may have to compete with large mixers and turbulent conditions.
