Biotech Disposables

Companies look to lower the bottom line
with cost-effective bio-bags

Biotechnology manufacturers compete in an environment that demands high throughput, high output, and high efficiency. Any device that can help cut costs while increasing productivity is seen as a bottom-line godsend.

This is particularly true in the cell culture media and process liquids market, where manufacturers are seeking ways to replace equipment requiring heavy capital expenditures with disposable items useful in R&D as well as in full-scale production. This market includes manufacturers of viral vaccines, monoclonal antibodies, and recombinant proteins, and much of the cost associated with their product is attributable to filing documentation and meeting current GMP and regulations on cleaning validation—issues easily addressed through the use of sterilized disposables.

For this market, disposable bio-bags provide just such a cost-efficient alternative. Some biotech firms find it difficult to free up staff for cleaning and validation activities, which can lead to production delays. Because bio-bags are FDA approved and come pre-sterilized, utilizing them eliminates labor costs associated with cleaning, sterilizing, and validating equipment.

Disposables also require less capital investment. Small to mid-size firms and contract manufacturers producing several products simultaneously cannot always afford to purchase separate process equipment for each line. With disposable bio-bags, equipment can be dedicated to more than one use. In addition, bio-bags offer savings in the area of quality control by eliminating the possibility of cross-contamination because they are single-use items.

Disposable bio-bags

Bio-bags are a cost-effective alternative to such traditional cell culture processing aparatus as carboys and plastic tanks, because they save money in terms of cleaning and validation costs. They are also economical alternatives to media bottles, media flasks, roller bottles, and spin flasks, and are made of USP Class VI grade films that offer strong seals, robustness, flexibility, pinhole resistance, and superior gas/moisture barriers. They also weigh less than their carboy counterparts, and lay flat when unused, saving valuable shelf space.
