Salt in Crude Oil
Challenge: The Liquid Gold Petroleum Refinery is responsible for transforming tons of crude oil into more useful products such as diesel, petrol, and fuel oil. For some reason, they have had a lot of trouble with their heat exchangers clogging up. One of their first steps in treating the crude oil is putting it through the desalter, removes the salt in the crude oil. The salt in the crude oil can cause a number of problems such as formation of hydrochloric acid from water hydrolysis, interference with important catalysts in the process, and additional build up in heat exchangers. Since the heat exchangers are clogging up and salt is often a major culprit in build up, the factory manager thinks there may be an issue with their desalter. To determine if there is an issue they decided to measure the salt in the crude oil before and after passing it through the desalter.
