A Sweet Dilemma

Challenge: Ms. Mars is trying to mix together two substances in two separate containers in order to create a nougat for her candy factory. One substance is extremely viscous while the other is a thin liquid. These substances need to be pumped at about the same speed and mixed together at various times throughout the day for at least 30 minutes.

Instead of using a mixer, she wants to transfer the two substances back and forth through their respective containers to ensure thorough mixing. Depending on the concentration of each container, she needs to be able to adjust the concentrations during the process. Ms. Mars is extremely busy with other experiments, so she needs this system semi-automated as well as easy to access.

Ms. Mars was looking at the Masterflex® L/S® variable-speed digital drives, but she also requires programming abilities, and dilute and dispensing functions in case the mixture is too concentrated. What should she do?

1. Use two separate pumps that are set at the same speed for both fluids.
2. Use the Masterflex L/S Digi-Staltic® system (77310-00 or 77340-00) with one controller to control two drives

3. Use two of the same pump heads or a multichannel pump head on a fixed-speed drive with different tubing sizes.
4. Use a centrifugal pump because of the flow rates that can be achieved, ease of use, and the economical price.
