Debugging Serial Buses in
Embedded System Designs
Embedded systems are literally everywhere in our society today. A simple definition
of an embedded system is a special-purpose computer system that is part of a
larger system or machine with the intended purpose of providing monitoring and
control services to that system or machine. The typical embedded system starts
running some special purpose application as soon as it is turned on and will not
stop until it is turned off. Virtually every electronic device designed and produced
today is an embedded system.

Take the challenge,
see if youre right...
No flow? No problem!
Challenge: Fred from ABC Corp. is pumping a chemically aggressive laquer at low flow rates and nominal temperatures. He ordered a Masterflex® L/S® compact drive together with an L/S Easy-Load® pump head which accepts Masterflex Precision pump tubing. He chose to use a Viton® formulation of tubing because it offers excellent chemical resistance.
Ready to begin pumping, Fred noticed that there was no flow and the pump head was unable to start rotating. If Fred removed the tubing from the pump head, the rotor assembly seemed to rotate freely. Fred’s problem is:
- The laquer is too viscous for L/S Precision pump tubing. His application requires L/S High-performance Precision tubing—which features a thicker wall and better suction lift—and a different pump head.
- Defective pump head. Rollers turn freely with no tubing installed.
- Starting torque using an L/S Easy-Load pump head requires 35 oz-in for Viton tubing. The L/S compact drive he is using produces a maximum torque of only 25 oz-in.
