Masterflex Case Study: Solutions for Gravy Powder Production

In the Food & Beverage industry, one manufacturer was challenged with finding a better option for a manual process. Masterflex® provided the solution.

MF_Pump_forGravyCaseStudyChallenge: The manufacturer’s process included delivering hot fat to produce stock powder and gravy. The hot fat needed to be transferred from large pans to the mixer to produce foods such as fully dispersible powdered stock mixes, gravy mixes, and concentrated stock pastes. This process had been done manually by pouring the hot fat onto the powder. Yet, this was risky for employees because it involved carrying buckets of hot fat. It also resulted in an inconsistent flow which caused globs in the gravy mix.

Solution: Cole-Parmer technical specialists recommended using a Masterflex Stainless Steel Process Drive with a high performance pump head, along with Masterflex PharMed® tubing.

Results:
Improved product consistency. Instead of an inconsistent texture from manually pouring, the manufacturer received a steady delivery of hot oil and the pump eliminated the large globules of gravy powder. Also, the oil can be delivered at a higher temperature
Meets health & safety requirements for employees. No need to lift heavy pans of hot oil to the mixer. The risk of splashing hot fat is also reduced.
Reduced production cycle time. It is quicker to pump hot oil than lift and manually pour it into the mixer
