Motors create motion to power everything from our computers to air conditioners to DVD players. For laboratories and process applications, how can you conserve energy when using your motors? Here are a few tips:

■ Upgrade your electrical distribution system

■ Run equipment during “off peak” times as much as possible

■ Turn off equipment when not in use

■ Run at higher voltages where possible

■ For pump applications, regulate flow via motor rpm instead of artificial back pressure or bypass

 Motor Types

DC Motors are used in a variety of variable-speed applications.

Air Motors are inherently intrinsically safe due to lack of electrical power. However, air motors are not as efficient as electric motors.

AC Motors come in two versions—single and three-phase powered. Single-phase power is available in residential and commercial locations, and is suitable for fixed-speed applications. Three-phase power lets you get variable-speed control with an appropriate controller. We recommend that you consult a qualified electrician for any electrical installation.
