Infrared’s Superpowers

Thermal Imagers

From the ability to see behind walls to capturing satellite images, infrared cameras (or thermal imagers) have reached superpower status. Just like big-screen heroes who rescue those in danger and outsmart the villains, this technology can help with search and rescue, crime-fighting, and more.

TI_ExpertSearch and rescue: With thermal imaging cameras, searchers can scan a large area within minutes. The cameras are an added advantage in the dark or in dense landscapes and hideaways where suspects may seek to elude police. Rescuers have also used this technology to search for missing persons in buildings, lots, and near bodies of water. Some thermal imaging systems also provide maritime first responders with the ability to rescue by water at night.

Crime scene investigation: To gather physical evidence and clues that may not be visible, heat sensors detect unsettled surfaces or difficult-to-see objects. Thermal imagers have uncovered weapons used in crimes.

Surveillance: For some time, infrared technology has been used to capture thermal energy for security purposes. Thermal cameras help identify threats that are not otherwise visible. They also are not overpowered by spotlights, lasers, or other bright lights that may prevent detection.
