Running some pumps dry can damage the pump—a costly practice. Which can be run dry? Peristaltic, piston with ceramic heads, bellows, and diaphragms can run dry for any length of time.
What types of pumps should not run dry? Centrifugal, rotary vane, and gears. The exceptions are if the gear or impeller is made of a self-lubricating material (such as Ryton®), then the pump can be run for a few minutes while priming.
Why would you run a pump dry? To finish out the fluid transfer or to prepare for the next run or perhaps because of improper use.
