Right before this COVID-19 pandemic escalated, I stopped into a business. I was looking for a bottle of hand sanitizer as I approached the reception desk. I didn\u2019t see one. I was surprised because many businesses were placing bottles of hand sanitizer everywhere for customers and employees to freely use when soap and water was not available. Afterall, the main message heard around the world was to keep your hands clean and don\u2019t touch your face.<\/p>\n
I was playing a game of \u201cWhere\u2019s Waldo\u201d, as I scanned the business for a bottle of hand sanitizer. Finally, I spotted one bottle hidden behind the reception desk. I asked if I could use some of it. The receptionist behind the desk hesitantly grabbed the bottle and pumped about a half a pump into my hands. I also asked if they would leave it on top of the desk for others to use. The receptionist quickly pulled it behind the desk and asked, \u201cShould we do that?\u201d The other person behind the desk interrupted saying, \u201cNo. No. If customers want hand sanitizer, they can ask for it because it is just too much everywhere.\u201d I stood there in silence staring at this person. Many thoughts came to my mind.<\/p>\n
To me this sent a clear message. This company does not care about keeping me safe. They have other selfish concerns. That verbal exchange left me feeling unprotected, unimportant as a customer, and concerned for my health and safety. I immediately thought\u2026Should I go back?<\/p>\n
After that day, this business was one of many forced to close due to government regulations and the rampant spread of the virus. I started to wonder how many other businesses weren\u2019t willing to share the hand sanitizer, too. I thought about what might have been if businesses were more generous with the hand sanitizer in the beginning of this pandemic. Would we still be in the same situation?<\/p>\n
I hope this business will have a change in mindset once it re-opens and freely place hand sanitizer on top of the reception desk and throughout for employees and customers to use.<\/p>\n
As you re-open your business, please keep in mind the health and safety of anyone walking through your doors.
