For this reason, it\u2019s critical to use a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coleparmer.com\/i\/thermo-scientific-nalgene-6355-0001-wraparound-face-shield-polycarbonate\/0676700\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">UV face shield<\/a> and cover all exposed skin areas when working with UV in the lab.<\/p>\n<h2>Sources of UV in the lab<\/h2>\n<p>Some sources of UV light in the lab setting include germicidal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coleparmer.com\/Category\/Ultraviolet_Lamps\/43443?referred_id=5618\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow noopener noreferrer\">lamps<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coleparmer.com\/p\/cole-parmer-ultraviolet-viewing-cabinets\/54434\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">viewing cabinets<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coleparmer.com\/p\/cole-parmer-high-performance-uv-transilluminators\/54437\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow noopener noreferrer\">transilluminators<\/a> used to visualize DNA bands in gels. If you are using this type of lab equipment, you most likely are wearing the proper PPE as determined by your lab\u2019s EHS.<\/p>\n<h2>Common UV terms<\/h2>\n<h3>Fluorescence<\/h3>\n<p>Emission of light produced by certain substances when excited by ultraviolet energy. The emission ends when UV source is removed.<\/p>\n<h3>Germicidal<\/h3>\n<p>Sterilization action of short wave ultraviolet light.
