Has your area has been particularly rainy? Even if you\u2019re not a hydrologist or meteorologist, you may wonder how much rain has fallen. Rain gauges<\/a> measure your accumulated level of precipitation.<\/p>\n

These instruments may be cabled or wireless and are available in several types. Many gauges\u2014even some on the more economical end of the spectrum\u2014meet National Weather Service (NWS) specifications for statistical accuracy.<\/p>\n

To get your best measurements, place your rain gauge where it can capture drops as they fall freely without bouncing into other objects. Professionals recommend placing the gauge up to five feet above the ground.<\/p>\n

Keep in mind that weather events with extreme winds, such as violent storms and hurricanes, will not produce a reliable measurement on a rain gauge.<\/p>\n
