{"id":778,"date":"2010-08-13T09:47:22","date_gmt":"2010-08-13T14:47:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.coleparmer.com\/blog\/?p=778"},"modified":"2023-01-05T00:21:44","modified_gmt":"2023-01-05T06:21:44","slug":"name-the-inventor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.coleparmer.com\/blog\/name-the-inventor\/","title":{"rendered":"Name the Inventor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><div id=\"attachment_779\" style=\"width: 104px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.coleparmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/nimposter.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-779\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-779\" title=\"National Inventors' Month\" src=\"https:\/\/www.coleparmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/nimposter.jpg?w=94\" alt=\"National Inventors' Month\" width=\"94\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.coleparmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/nimposter.jpg 314w, https:\/\/www.coleparmer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/nimposter-188x300.jpg 188w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 94px) 100vw, 94px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-779\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">August is National Inventors\u2019 Month<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><p>August is National Inventors Month, a 31-day celebration of individuals who have tirelessly worked to advance our way of life. <a title=\"Cell Biology Lab Supplies\" href=\"\/industry\/cell-biology\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Cole-Parmer <\/a>wants to acknowledge one individual in particular for his discoveries in chemistry and biology (and this Friday, August 13 he celebrates his 92 birthday).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This distinguished individual is the only man thus far to have won two Nobel prizes for his accomplishments in chemistry.\u00a0 In 1955, he determined the complete amino acid sequence of the polypeptide chains of insulin.\u00a0 This discovery showed that proteins have a defined chemical composition, debunking the previous belief that proteins lacked a specific shape or structure.\u00a0 His work in uncovering these amino acid sequences of insulin earned him his first Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1958. This breakthrough, in turn, helped pave the way for later discoveries by Francis Crick in how base sequences of DNA or RNA determine the sequence of amino acids.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Not one to stop there, he continued investigating proteins and nucleic acid sequences, and in 1975 developed the \u201cdideoxy\u201d method for DNA sequencing.\u00a0 This chain-termination method offers a means of rapidly and efficiently sequencing DNA. It soon became the preferred method of DNA sequencing and is used in the Human Genome Project.\u00a0 It utilizes gel electrophoresis machines to quickly sequence DNA and has led to countless advances in forensics and disease management. \u00a0It is a method more commonly referred to by this scientist\u2019s surname.
