To build awareness of chemistry and help promote science, 2019 has been declared as the \u201cInternational Year of the <a href=\"\/i\/chemical-periodic-table-of-the-elements-large\/1514502\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Periodic Table of Chemical Elements<\/a> (IYPT2019)\u201d by the United Nations General Assembly and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).<\/p>\n<h2>The genius of Dmitri Mendeleev<\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"st\">History of the Periodic Table is rich and can be researched back 200 years,\u00a0but Dmitri\u00a0Ivanovich\u00a0Mendeleev is most noted for the Periodic Table. He developed the Periodic Table in 1866 to\u00a0show<\/span>\u00a0periodic trends of the then-known 62 elements.\u00a0<span class=\"st\">While there were many chemists before and after Mendeleev who looked for ways to present the elements, he is the first to publish a version of the table.\u00a0<\/span>Mendeleev believed there would be the discovery of additional elements, so he left blanks in the table.<span class=\"st\">\u00a0What\u2019s extraordinary about Mendeleev\u2019s achievement is he left blanks in the table at various points for undiscovered elements. He was able to predict the properties of five elements and their compounds. It is a vital tool for modern chemists. Merriam-Webster defines the Periodic Table as <em>an arrangement of chemical elements based on the periodic law<\/em>.\u00a0<span class=\"st\">In most\u00a0chemical laboratories and classrooms around the world, the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements is a staple that can\u00a0be seen hanging somewhere in the room.
