In cancer research it is important to ensure that studies reflect the <em>in vivo<\/em> situation of tumours to make models representative of reality. In a recent study, Voorde <em>et al<\/em> (2019), <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/advances.sciencemag.org\/content\/5\/1\/eaau7314\" target=\"_blank\">demonstrated<\/a> that the nutrient content of commercially sourced media can result in \u201cmetabolic artefacts on cancer cells\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>An untargeted metabolic comparison investigated how triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) cultured cells were affected by a nutrient-rich culture medium in comparison to a standard commercial media <em>in vitro<\/em>. The TNBC cells were seeded in media in <a title=\"Techne Cell Culturing Flasks\" href=\"\/p\/techne-cell-culturing-flasks-for-cell-culture-stirring-systems\/66681\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Techne Cell Culturing Flasks<\/a> to create spheres for Liquid Chromatography Tandem Mass Spectrometry analysis. <em>In vivo<\/em> results were also collected for comparison. A Principal component analysis grouped the cell cultures by biological conditions and displayed that nutrient content influences grouping.<\/p>\n<p>This research has highlighted the importance of trace elements in cancer biology.
