More About this Item

Large interior volume -- The space saving design of the desiccator dome provides maximum interior clearances. They provide an average of 13% greater interior volume than standard hemispherical domes.
Extra heavy walls -- Clear polycarbonate top and choice of white polypropylene or polycarbonate bottom. This strong, shatterproof desiccator will hold a full vacuum (29.9" Hg [759mm]) at room temperature for 24 hours and will remain air tight even if not under vacuum.
Featuring
A polypropylene stopcock with a PTFE® TFR plug which turns, allowing a slow, gentle entrance of air preventing unnecessary turbulence and crucible damage. The stopcock handle is a highly visible red and has a port which accepts 1/4" (6.4mm) I.D. tubing.
A large ribbed knob at the top center for easy lifting.
A Neoprene O-ring seal which does not require grease, but is not harmed if grease is used.
A polypropylene plate 3.2 mm (1/8") thick with 3.2mm (1/8") diameter perforations for air transfer. The plate rests on the retaining ledge of the bottom section and has a center hole for easy removal.
Choice of Bottom Section: Polypropylene provides excellent chemical resistance and permits the use of incandescent crucibles with standard size procelain plates. All clear Polycarbonate bottoms are available in the same sizes.

Comments about Bel-Art 42025 Plastic Vacuum desiccator, 230 mm plate size:

I run a small business making model boats in polyester resin. I use this for degassing the resin before pouring in moulds and to remove gas after the resin is poured. It's compact so takes less space on the workbench.

Comments about Bel-Art 42025 Plastic Vacuum desiccator, 230 mm plate size:

My company uses this bell jar as a vacuum vessel to de-air epoxy resins after mixing, and for vacuum encapsulation of delicate electronic samples. These vacuum dessicators are the perfect blend of affordability, safety and performance for our application. We use each one many times a day and need to replace them about every 2-3 months.

Comments about Bel-Art 42025 Plastic Vacuum desiccator, 230 mm plate size:

We are a commercial metallography lab and use the dessicator for vacuum encapsulation of samples in epoxy molds. The polycarbonate is much safer than glass jars. The epoxy outgasses and eventually coats the inside of the jar reducing visibility. Clening of the old glass dessicators was difficult, but the plastic dessicators are inexpensive enough to simply replace periodically.

    • Q:

How well does this desiccator hold vacuum, i.e. if pumped down to 1 mbar, how long would it be before the pressure rises to say 10 mbar? Am considering this desiccator for longer term storage of sensitive material science samples under vacuum.
Asked on 1/1/2016 by Felix from Oxford, UK

      • STAFF EXPERT

        A:

This desiccator stores full vacuum 29.9" Hg (759mm) at room temperature for 24 hours. However, if this desiccator is to be held under vacuum for a long duration (over 72 hours), vacuum grease may be applied to the O-ring, flanges and stopcock valve tapers.

What % humidity can be removed from the inside of this desiccator

      • Staff Reviewer

        A:

It depends upon the method used, as you can use this with desiccant/drying pellets, as well pulling vacuum in the unit.
This unit will handle a full 29.9"Hg vacuum - so there would be virtually no air inside the unit, and humidity levels would then be null.

        A:

This vacuum desiccator does not come with a desiccant. It is equipped with a perforated disk that can be used to provide space for desiccant beneath the items stored. You can use bulk desiccant such as loose indicating Drierite, 07193-05, or you can use a desiccant-filled plate, 07193-90. This desiccator stores full vacuum 29.9" Hg (759mm) at room temperature for 24 hours.

Is the volume of this dessicator 5liters and more?

      1 answer

      • STAFF EXPERT

        A:

This desiccator has a total volume of ~12L. When you take out the space below the plate (area for dessicant), this leaves you with ~9L working volume.

      1 answer

      • STAFF EXPERT

        A:

The maximum use temperature of the materials from which this dessicator is made is 135 degC. 105C won't be a problem.
