Includes

One glass and one 316 stainless steel (SS) high-precision ball. For higher viscosity ranges, use the optional tantalum ball (sold separately).

More About this Item

This viscometer is extremely easy to use; first fill the tube with sample, then invert tube. Next, restore tube to normal position, turn the knob to release the ball, and then simply measure the time of descent. The ball moves against a white background with red reference lines making it easy to read. Repeatability with good technique varies from ±0.2 to ±1.0%, depending upon time of descent. Falling ball viscometers require a 7-mL sample volume.
Gilmont viscometers have wetted materials of glass, Viton®, and Delrin® acetal. PTFE O-rings are available for use with lquids that adhere to Viton®; call our Applications Specialists for more information.

      Falling ball viscometers are commonly used for measuring viscosity of many fluids, serum included. As long as your expected viscosity range will be in the range of this unit, there should be no issues.

    What is the meaning of the x1467 label on the viscometer image? I've had to use these in a course lab and the viscometers provided had different numbers and letters printed on them. The lab instructor couldn't explain their purpose though.

      The numbers listed above the red line on these viscometers are the serial numbers. The x1467 is a very old unit, especially considering we are in the 10,000 range now. The 1 stands for the "size 1" glass tube. So, the first digit will tell you what size glass tube is used.

      The formula for viscosity is:
      µ = K (ρt - ρ) t
      Where µ = viscosity (in cp), ρt is density of the ball (g/mL, glass = 2.53, SS = 8.02, tantalum = 16.6), ρ = density of liquid, t = time (minutes), K = viscometer constant (3.3).

    We deal with materials that are very air/moisture sensitive. Do you have a viscometer that can measure between 2cP to 200cP for this application?

      This viscometer is a good choice, add 08702-50 tantalum ball to reach the 200cP needed. Another consideration would be item 08708-30. The outer jacket can be temperature controlled on this viscometer and could provide more stability for your samples.

      There are many different types of hydraulic and motor oil and they can vary drastically in viscosity. As long as the oils you are looking to measure have a viscosity from 2 to 100cp (with tantalum ball, 08702-50, range extends to 200cp) you can use this viscometer. If you require a higher range I suggest using the 08702-10 (20 to 1000cp; with tantalum ball the range extends to 2000cp).

      There are four lines on a falling ball viscometer; you start a stop watch when the ball is between the top two lines and stop it when it is between the bottom two lines. There aren't lines on it that would need resolution. Repeatability +/-0.2 to 1%
