More About this Item

Locate and mark buried utilities and lines?and reduce excavation costs with the split-box pipe and cable locator. It traces underground conductive water pipes; gas mains; and telephone, cable TV, and power cables as well as locate metallic masses such as pipes, valve caps, and manhole covers.

The locator consists of a transmitter which energizes the line with a radio-frequency signal and a receiver which detects the signal. Energize line either by direct connection to the metallic line (conductive) or with no direct mechanical connection (inductive). A conductive mode requires exposed line so a direct connection can be made. The energized line increases the tracing distance and minimizes signal coupling to other lines. An inductive mode is ideal for locating buried lines when no direct connection can be made. Simply place the transmitter on the ground above the line then induce the line with the transmitted signal. The transmitter retransmits the signal through the ground and air in a pattern that corresponds to its path. Once the utility line is detected, the receiver produces both audible and visual signals; connect a headphone using the audio output port.

Use peak and null detection for locating line quickly and accurately. The receiver detects peaks (maximum signals) when the transmitter is held at a right angle to the surface of the ground directly above the line. When the receiver is held parallel to the surface of the ground, the detection of minimum signal or null (absence of signal) indicates that the line is directly below. Small in size and lightweight, this locator is easy to carry around—transmitter and receiver each only weighs 1.1 kg (2.5 lb) and measures 16.5 x 6 x 21.5 cm (6-1/2" x 2-3/8" x 8-1/2").
