Comments about Atago 3810 (PAL-1) Digital Pocket Refractometer, 0-53% Brix:

I would use a manual optical refractometer in the past and got tired of interpolating results with my eyes. Now I use the Atago and simply trust the numbers it provides. Previously I had some issues with hot wort (unfermented beer) Brix readings moving around, Atago suggested the MAGIC RE-39411 part which solved my issue. Basically one it helps bring the sample to the temperature of the stage (ambient) more quickly but more importantly it stops evaporation from occuring which can obviously make the apparent Brix value climb as water is driven off of the sample leaving behind the dissolved solids. Also it's a fantastic way to track during fermentation, rather than draw off large samples wasting product and possibly introducing pathogens you can simply draw off using a sterile pipette. Using a statistical regression like Sean Terrill's you can account for the error introduced by the presence of ethanol to arrive at a corrected Brix or extrapolated specific gravity.

Comments about Atago 3810 (PAL-1) Digital Pocket Refractometer, 0-53% Brix:

We use this product for quick testing in the QC lab as well as for on-the-go testing in the plant. It is easy to use and calibrate. Anyone can operate it with just a little training. It has proven to have similar precision and accuracy to our full size benchtop Abbe refractometer which is carefully maintained and calibrated by the lab. Recommended for all %Brix testing (we use it for solids testing on everything from corrosive chemical cleaners to neutral oil solutions).

This is the best small refractometer that I have used. The operators like it because they don't have to hold the refractometers up to the light and rely on their eyes to get results.

can this unit be used to measure machine coolant concentrations?
Asked on 9/29/2015 by John - QA from Glastonbury, CT

            • STAFF EXPERT

              A:

This unit is uses the Brix scale for measuring the amount of sugar in a fluid. This will not directly correlate to coolant. You can create your own scale by measuring a coolant of known concentration. We also offer a unit especially for coolant, item 02941-66

Will this refractometer accurately measure the total dissolved solids in coffee?

            • STAFF EXPERT

              A:

Yes, this refractometer will do that. However, I would recommend PAL-Cleaner (00353ND) because it has a second decimal place and is therefore more accurate, within accuracy for the demands of the coffee industry.

I am interested in monitoring a circulating water/propylene glycol (50%/50% VOLUME)bath. It is used in the range 0f -5 to 57 degrees C. Occasionally I need to add water to the bath, because even though it is covered, some evaporation occurs.Could your Model 02941-60 be used to monitor the bath, so that the propylene glycol and water are maintained in approximately equal volumes?

            • STAFF EXPERT

              A:

A better choice of refractometer would be part number: 02941-64. This measures specifically a propylene glycol/water scale, and will read out in percentage propylene glycol, from 0 to 90%.

Will this unit give me a persentage on the Ethylene glycol consentration in my ETO scrubber?

            • STAFF EXPERT

              A:

We do offer two units that are specifically designed for Ethylene glycol. Please look at items 02941-60 and 02941-62. The difference is the 02941-60 shows the freezing point in Celsius while the 02941-62 shows it in Fahrenheit.

can this refractometer give me the % of sodium in acid I currently have a the sight glass but needed to know if this would work?

              A:

This unit reads in Brix% only, it will not give RI values. If you already have a chart to correlate the Brix value to the concentration of sodium in acid made, you could still use that chart to then know what the Brix% value is. Please contact us by phone or email for additional support.

How many decimal places has the instrument's display (for RI)? The reading range is (for RI) 1.3306-1.5284, so I was expecting 4 decimal places, but in the display I have only 2.

              A:

This specific unit does not read in RI, but there is a conversion table if needed. We do offer a unit that will read to four decimal places in RI mode, as well as measure Brix, please see part number 00196GT.

          • Q:

We take raw kibbled gum and dissolve it RO water. We need to test to properties of the dissolve gum. The first is the percentage solids (gum). Because the raw kibbled gum is very dirty we also need to check that all “dirt’ has been removed. This dirt is very fine. It is in the .25 micron to .75 micron. Can this instrument test for both properties?
Asked on 2/5/2011 by Anonymous from Batavia, IL

            1 answer

            • STAFF EXPERT

              A:

This instrument would only test the percentage of solids. It would not be able to determine if the dirt has been removed or if there are solid particles in it. It can only measure dissolved solids, undissolved solids would give an off reading in the meter.

Is it suitable for nector analysis in the field?

            • Staff Reviewer

              A:

Yes, if your nectar has a Brix value between 0-53% this unit should work well in the field. It is battery operated and can be easily cleaned and calibrated/zeroed with water.
