More About this Item

These portable digital viscometers are lightweight and can be operated handheld or on a stand (order separately) for your convenience. Converting the handheld to use on a stand is only a matter of seconds - simply place in the special instrument holder. Use for quick viscosity tests for process optimization, machine adjustment, or to ensure your product is within specification.
By displaying viscosity on a digital display, human error associated with manual timing and misreading analog dials are eliminated. Possible handling errors as well as service information are also shown on the display.
Pushing a button to turn the unit on; push the button again to select the rotor type, then begin measuring. A rotor rotating at a constant speed is immersed in the fluid to be tested; the fluid's resistance to the rotation is correlated to measuring the fluid viscosity. Three different-sized rotors are included with the viscometer for multiple application capabilities.

What's inlcuded: three rotors, carrying case, and four AA batteries. Model 08705-02 also includes one 150-mL sample cup.

  • Q:

would this handheld viscometer work with mineral slurries containing variable particle size, say as course as few hundred microns and as fine as tens of microns?
Asked on 4/15/2014 by Operator from Wilmington, DE

    1 answer

    • STAFF EXPERT

      A:

Yes, dispersed particles this small should not be a problem for this instrument.

  • Q:

Is this unit capable of measuring viscosities of thick pastes that do not flow (similar to peanut butter) in the range of 10000 cPs? If yes, what is the maximum RPM for measuring the viscosity of such pastes with this device?
    Asked on 10/30/2012 by Andisheh

    • STAFF EXPERT

      A:

The maximum range for this unit is 400,000 cPs, so 10,000 cps is well within range. You would not need to set the speed setting for this unit - simply select the rotor that is being used and you would be ready to take measurements. This comes with the rotors to cover the range specified and operates at a constant speed, the rotor number 3, or "R3," would be used for the 10,000 cPs range.

    • A:

Yes. This viscometer is capable of mixing thixotropic materials and heavy pastes. I have used it widely and works very well.

  • Q:

Can the viscometer be inserted directly into a tank of product for example to avoid having to take a sample?
    Asked on 2/14/2012 by Anonymous

    • STAFF EXPERT

      A:

Measurements can be taken directly from a tank. It is specifically designed for quick field tests.

  • Q:

What is the maximum operating tempreture of the fluid to be tested?
is there a temp probe / readout on the device?
What is the range in centistokes? we need to measure approx 600 cSt at 40 deg C although oil temp can reach 150 deg c.

    • STAFF EXPERT

      A:

This viscometer has a temperature range up to 150°C (302°F). This meter does not have a temperature sensor. This viscometer measures dynamic viscosity (centipoise), it does not measure kinematic viscosity (centistokes). You can get the kinematic viscosity by dividing the dynamic viscosity by the density of the fluid.

  • Q:

    Hi,

I want to know this product is meet ASTM standared, or D88.this is suitable for Oil application.

    • Staff Reviewer

      A:

We do not have ASTM methods on file to reference specifications. This would fine for use with oils as long as the oil viscosity is within the instrument's range.
