We bought 4 of these in June 2008. We use them about 4 hours a day, 5 days a week. I would expect a lot more from a [$] unit. It generally works well, but several things have either broken or needed repairs. On off switch has broken, you have to be carefull when adjusting the tourque ring, and they tend to develop a grinding noise after a while. We keep our units clean, follow the instructions, and do not mix heavy slurries.

We have used many different types of small mixers both in the lab and in production. The IKA RW 20 outperforms, and outlasts the rest and is easier to use than all the others we have tried - and it is digital. We can set the speed where we want it for different applications. What could be better than that. Its a keeper because it still works like it did when we got it! (We just ordered 2 more.)

This mixer was purchased after several heavy duty high viscosity stir plates failed miserably to provide an adequate mix. This mixer works wonderfully in viscous fluids and solutions with heavy particles.
The mixer is somewhat heavy and can be difficult to use if frequent adjustment in height is needed. The mixer is very stable (I had no fear of it tipping over), is well built, and is easy to clean.

Although on the expensive side, it is a great product. Only issue: the cooling vent for the motor exhausts downward, which, when you want to add powders to the stirred liquid, tends to blow the powder around instead of into the liquid. A sideways vent would be much better.

It is good even on viscous liquid, ex:- Paints, Gels and Immulsions.
But it needs to have some choices for the selection of accessories like stand and base plate.

These IKA mixers are superior to most others. They don't advertise it, but you can use long shafts with these - just pop out the plastic plug in the top and the shaft passes all the way through - most other mixers don't allow that. Also, the speed control is smooth and the AC motor beats brush DC motors hands down after years of service (no "jumping" from arcing in graphite dust)

The motor is rated for continuous duty; however, when dealing with liquids that are closer to the maximum viscosity that the unit can handle, running the motor continuously can result in burning it out.

This product comes with a four blade impeller. It also uses a 3/8" diameter shaft, for which there are a wide range of sizes and types of impellers available. You would loosen the keyed chuck to remove the shaft and impeller included with this model.

                            A:

The mixer impeller blades are separated from the mixer for shipping, so they are boxed separately. The mixer depth is adjusted manually, there is no control for moving the mixer or shaft up/down. Cleaning the mixer depends on what products you were mixing, but typically only the shaft and impeller are removed for extensive cleaning.
