    Would this meter be a good choice for daily measuring of the pH level in a swimming pool?

      A:

      Yes, as long as the sensor (of this or any other pocket pH tester) is rinsed off after testing this unit would work well to test swimming pool pH.

    Could this tester be used to test bar soap directly? Or should the soap be in solution?

      A:

      This unit does not have a probe that would insert into the bar, and would not work well then to test it. If the soap was in solution this meter would work. Even ISFET probes with insertion type probes would have a hard time taking the reading of hard bar soap without any water or liquid to transfer ions through.

      A:

      Measuring pH is non-aqueous solutions is never easy to accomplish. This probe would not be the best for that application. Consider instead using a sleeve junction electrode such as 58820-59. There are other ways to help improve the quality of aqueous measurements including creating non-aqueous calibration buffers and changing the internal filling solution of your electrode to a non-aqueous solvent.       A:

      This is a good choice for measuring the pH of foods. The stainless steel probe is easy to clean and won't leave any chemical residues that traditional pH probes do.

    What is the accuracy in the 1.8- 2.8 pH range.

      A:

      The range for this unit is listed as 2-12 pH. The accuracy within that full range is +/-0.1pH. The unit may be able to read below 2 pH, however, we do not have accuracy information outside of its listed range. To work with lower pH values, I suggest looking into our 59540-22. This is a meter and ISFET probe with a range from 0 to 14pH.

    Is this meter suitable for testing the pH of canning? Can it do hot ingredients?

      A:

      This can be used to take the pH of semi-solids (cheese, jell-o, etc) and liquids. The highest temperature this unit can handle is 104F or 40C, warm but not hot.

    Is this meter suitable for direct soil pH testing, or does the soil have to be combined with water to form a slurry?

      A:

      We recommend that this pH probe be used with a slurry. Please see the following procedure:
      Using pH buffers calibrate the meter and electrode instructions.
      Loosen soil from the ground with a plastic scoop. Avoid touching soil with hands.
      Using the scoop remove any stones and crush any clump of soil to prevent damage to your electrode.
      Add equal portions of soil to distilled water in the jar. Be sure that the sample will allow sufficient immersion of your electrode. For example 50g of soil to 50 ml of water.
      Gently mix the soil slurry then let it stand for 10 minutes to allow the salts to dissolve in the soil.
      Dip electrode into the slurry and record the pH.
      Run test 3 times and average results.

      Please make sure to remove any stones or other particles in the soil that could damage the sensor (scratch it or crack it).
