Used in the field to get pH and Temp readings on water samples from groundwater monitoring wells or groundwater pump and treat systems. Would have been nicer if it came in a carrying case.

We are a dietary supplement manufacturer. I am looking for a pH meter for use in equipment cleaning validation- the idea is to measure the pH of production water, then compare against that of equipment rinse water after cleaning. Is this meter appropriate for such use? If not, please recommend one that is better. Thank you.

Is this meter good for Tris buffer solutions? Thanks.
Asked on 8/5/2011 by Anonymous from Little Rock, AR

        1 answer

        • STAFF EXPERT

          A:

The important selection for measuring Tris buffer solutions is the electrode, which must be Tris compatible. The electrode that comes with this part number is not recommended for tris buffers. Instead I would use part number: 05718-02.

Is it possible to measure the ph level of oil an ethanol?

        • Staff Reviewer

          A:

pH measurements in non-aqueous solutions should be done with a sure-flow or flushable style junction probes. In these probes the reference solution is injected into the sample directly. Ions would then dissolve into the reference solution and a reading could be taken.
The probe included with this unit is a simple single junction probe. I suggest getting the meter and ATC probe (part number 35613-01), and the 35805-04 flushable junction probe separately.

I am a manufacturer of home care cleaning products( like dishwash, floor cleaners, pine oil concentrate etc.) can I use this product for ph testing of my formulations. If not pls suggest the right equipment.

          A:

Yes, this unit will work for testing various cleaners. If your cleaners have any harsh acids you might want to consult with our technical department to make sure the probe will withstand the acid. But general cleaners typically are diluted and are not an issue.

      • Q:

I have an Oakton Acorn 5 ph meter. I didn't use it for a while, and when I try to calibrate it, it gives a wrong PH for buffer references (ie. shows 7.33 for PH 7). I was wondering if I have to replace the electrode. If so what would you recommend.

          A:

I suggest soaking the probe in heated (50 C) pH 4 buffer for at least 20 minutes to clean off the probe. Then calibrate the meter and see if it is any quicker to stabilize. If not, yes we do suggest changing the probe.

How will this meter work with wine, or wine musts? Will use for wine samples affect the life of the electrode?

        • STAFF EXPERT

          A:

This product will work for measuring the pH of wine. Keep in mind that the bulb is glass, which may not be ideal for your manufacturing process. I would recommend an ISFET pH meter, such as part number: 59541-10. ISFET technology uses glass-free probes and boasts a better lifetime.

Is this produce suitbable for measuring the pH of soil, say when it is in a solutionof distilled water?
Asked on 5/21/2010 by Anne from Edmonton, AB

        • STAFF EXPERT

          A:

This meter will work without a problem. The single junction electrode that comes in this package will work fine for a while, however, it may experiece a short life. I would suggest using a soil electrode (such as our 05992-63) or a double-junction electrode (such as the 05992-14) for this application. You can order the same Acorn pH meter without the electrode as our 35613-01.
