Connectors for peristaltic pump tubing

Connecting soft wall peristaltic tubing to any fluidics system or application has always been a challenge. This is especially true when peristaltic pumps are used for precision and micro fluidic applications. For example, small inner diameters for Tygon® and other soft wall tubing used to pump very low flow rates require specialized barbed adapters and connectors, whereas larger ID tubing for increased flow rates demands a more sturdy and secure connection. We provide a variety of solutions for the most common and uncommon connection needs for soft wall peristaltic tubing, which we want to introduce below.

Microbarb adapters for micro fluidic applications

Dibafit Microbarb Adapter

Low-carryover connection for soft wall to semi-rigid tubing
Microbarb from Dibafit™ provide a secure, low-carryover connection between flexible soft tubing with very small ID’s and semi-rigid tubing. Two components ensure that both, the ID and OD of the soft wall tubing are firmly gripped, ensuring a secure connection. The barbed component fits inside the narrow tube ID. The threaded outer connector slips over the tubing OD and secures the barb in place by tightening a standard ¼”-28 (UNF) flat bottom fitting, commonly found in a variety of low pressure, flat bottom fittings. The female thread is standard ¼”-28 (UNF), commonly found in a variety of low pressure, flat bottom fittings. PEEK™ construction gives a chemically inert and robust connection. The adapters are sized for commonly used peristaltic tube sizes for micro fluidic applications.

  • Connect soft wall tubing from 0.01" (0.25 mm) to 0.03" (0.76 mm) ID
  • Connect with standard 1/4"-28 UNF flat bottom fittings
  • Connect soft wall with semi rigid tubing (e.g. PTFE, FEP etc.)

Thread to barbed adapters for sterile applications

Dibafit barbed adapterConnect a variety of soft wall tubing sizes to threaded ports with semi-rigid tubing
DibaFit barbed adaptors are designed for use with soft wall tubing. Machined from chemically resistant PEEK™ or acetal they have a superior barb with a crisp edge that retains soft wall tubing more securely than molded adaptors. A tight, leak-free connection can be ensured by matching the ID of your tubing to the barb size of the adaptor. If there is not an exact match, always choose the barb size that is just larger than your tubing ID. To connect soft wall tubing Dibafit barbed adapterinto any female 1/4”-28 UNF port, use a male ¼”-28 UNF to barb adaptor. The male thread screws into the port and tubing can then be pushed over the barb. To connect soft wall tubing to any male 1/4”-28 UNF thread, use a female 1/4”-28 UNF to barb adaptor. The barb is inserted into the soft wall tubing and the female ¼ UNF port is available to receive any ¼”-28 UNF threaded fitting. Connecting a male and female adapter allows to create a customized barbed to barbed adapter.

To connect soft wall tubing into any female 1/4”-28 UNF port, use a male ¼”-28 UNF to barb adaptor. The male thread screws into the port and tubing can then be pushed over the barb.

  • Available from 1.0 mm ID to 8.0 mm ID
  • Available with 1/4"-28 flat bottom, male and female
  • Available in PEEK™ and Acetal
  • Machined barb—holds soft wall tubing tight

Swivel barbed adapters prevent tubing twist during installation and use

Upchurch Scientific swivel barbed adapterThe swivel barb adapters from Upchurch Scientific® are made up of two captive pieces acting as a one-piece fitting for ease of use. Manufactured from Polypropylene and available in three barb sizes, the swivel barb will facilitate connection between flexible tubing to a 1/4-28 flat-bottom port. The barbed insert spins freely from the threaded nut to prevent the tubing from twisting during installation.

  • Free spinning, two-piece adapter
  • Connects to 1/4"-28 flat bottom ports
  • For 1/16", 3/32" and 1/8" ID soft wall tubing
  • Made from polypropylene

Peristaltic tubing adapters

Peristaltic tubing secured adapter

Secured connections and conical adapters for peristaltic tubing
These unique adapters from Upchurch Scientific connect peristaltic tubing to standard 1/16” or 1/8” OD tubing. A specially-designed nose allows the peristaltic tubing to simply press fit over the nose and then be held tightly in place by the retainer sleeve. Your 1/16” OD tubing may then be connected with the Flangeless Fittings supplied with the adapter.

Secure adapters for peristaltic tubing

Peristaltic tubing adapters from Upchurch Scientific
Connect peristaltic soft wall tubing (e.g. Tygon®) to rigid and semi rigid tubing with 1/4"-28 flat bottom fittings: These unique adapters connect peristaltic tubing to standard 1/16” or 1/8” OD tubing. A specially-designed nose allows the peristaltic tubing to simply press fit over the nose and then be held tightly in place by the retainer sleeve. Your 1/16” OD tubing may then be connected with the Flangeless Fittings supplied with the adapter. To connect your peristaltic tubing to 1/8” OD tubing, simply replace the supplied fittings with your choice of flangeless fittings. One popular application for these adapters is to use them as “stops” for your peristaltic pump. By doing so, you can reduce the amount of peristaltic tubing required for your flow path, thus reducing cost.

Up to 0.18" (4.55 mm) 0.048" - 0.110" (1.2 - 2.8 mm) 0.030" (0.75 mm)
Up to 0.25" (6.35 mm) 0.100" - 0.150" (2.6 - 3.8 mm) 0.070" (1.78 mm)

Each adapter includes:

  • Adapter body, adapter cap
  • 3 sizes of retainer sleeves
  • (Ferrule, ETFE)
  • (Fitting Nut, PEEK)

Conical Adapters

The conical nose of the adapter provides flexibility to connect a variety of soft wall tubing ID's.

  • Directly connect 1/16" and 1/8" OD rigid and semi -rigid tubing to peristaltic soft wall tubing
  • Accepts 0.020" - 1/8" ID (0.50mm - 3.2mm ID) peristaltic tubing
  • Biocompatible flow path with excellent chemical compatibility

Upchurch Scientific® Conical Adapters manufactured by IDEX Health & Science provide a reliable connection between rigid/semi-rigid tubing and peristaltic-type flexible tubing, such as Tygon® and PharMed®. These adapters are composed of a PEEK™ polymer female nut, our Super Flangeless™ ferrule system and an ETFE or PEEK conical adapter body. The narrow-coned end of the adapter body allows peristaltic tubing to slide on more easily than it does onto conventional barbed adapters. Peristaltic tubing is also easier to remove from our Conical Adapters, since no cutting or excessive pulling is required. Instead of using the included Super Flangeless Ferrule system and the female nut, the adapter body can also directly connected with any 1/4"-28 female flat bottom port. This allows the connector to be used with e.g. bottle caps, solenoid valves and other standard laboratory fluidics equipment.
