Application Specialist Jon in our technical support area is still thrilled when he gets a question from a NASA engineer regarding product specifications for spacecraft test platforms. After eight years of fielding technical support calls, Jon has answered thousands of calls. Yet, his technical expertise to suggest a potential new solution to NASA is a mountaintop experience.
Jon developed his abilities through a series of positions as a field service technician, sales engineer, and instrument technician, among others. Armed with a degree in chemistry, Jon began his career by serving four years in the Navy as a fire control technician. After that, he worked for manufacturers, an R&D lab, and a telecommunications company. Eventually, he found his niche helping customers at Cole-Parmer.
“My strength is translating technical information into plain English,” said Jon. “I can capture ideas from other disciplines and apply them in unexpected ways. This helps solve what can be a difficult issue.”
Because he previously worked on chromatography and spectroscopy products, these are Jon’s specialties along with process controls and weather stations.
Yet, it all comes down to what Jon calls the thrill of the hunt—finding products and solutions that aren’t necessarily obvious. “Your challenges are the most fun,” he said. “Bring them on!”
