What is the Cole-Parmer Cryo-Blade Cryogenic Grinder

A cryogrinder is a laboratory mill used for grinding or homogenizing organic samples at extremely low temperatures. When analyzing a sample or material, good homogeneity of the material is essential to obtain a representative sample. Grinding and mixing is an efficient way to obtain such a result. Unfortunately, some materials are difficult or impossible to process to a homogenous form. Cryogenic grinding is a great solution for those materials.

When cooled to cryogenic temperatures, samples freeze and become hard and brittle. This process is used to break the sample and homogenize it into a fine powder. The powder can then be analyzed by several different methods such as LC or GC.

The Cole-Parmer Cryo-Blade cryogenic grinder accommodates a wide range of both dry and high water content samples like watermelon to the tough muscle tissue and plant roots.

How the Cryo-Blade Cryogenic Grinder works

The Cryo-Blade uses liquid nitrogen or dry ice to chill the sample to cryogenic temperature. The grinding cycle is started, the sample is mixed and frozen, and then pulverized to a fine powder. The time required to grind the material to powder form is 15 minutes or less.

The bowl has an opening in the lid to insert small pieces of samples into the bowl. Up to 1 kg of material can be processed.

The Cryo-Blade operation is simple with the LCD touchscreen to control the grinding process. One of three preset run protocols can be used to grind a sample or modified based on the amount of sample amount. Using liquid nitrogen or dry ice produces a high volume of gas (N2, CO2) as it evaporates. The Cryo-Blade is therefore equipped with an exhaust system to evacuate the gases produced. The exhaust can be directly connected to the building’s main exhaust system or placed under a vent hood.
